This project will develop interface-sensitive techniques to investigate the chemical state of catalyst nanoparticles and the reactions occurring on their surfaces under realistic reaction conditions (>1 bar, 200-500 °C). This will make use of thin membranes based on 2D materials that act as X-ray and electron transparent windows. Deposition of nanoparticles with controlled size and composition will give well-defined model systems to obtain deeper insight into real catalyst systems, with the ultimate aim of revealing how the reactions occurring relate to the state of the catalyst.
