This project aims to develop controlled deposition of well-defined 2D material electrocatalysts by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), as well as their integration with size-selected alloy nanoparticles to produce hybrid systems. These will be used as model electrocatalysts for studying how their electronic structure affects performance and stability. Novel operando techniques will be applied where these model systems will be used as atomically thin electrodes which are transparent to X-rays and electrons, allowing measurements of the electrode-electrolyte interface with XPS and NEXAFS. The ultimate aim is to reveal relationships between the chemical state of electrocatalysts and their performance so that improved catalysts can be rationally designed.
