PhD and PostDoc Positions at IFIMAC-UAM on Machine Learning, AFM and biomolecular simulations

2 PhD and 2 postdoctoral positions are available in Rubén Pérez’s group (Scanning Probe Microscopy and Nanomechanics) at the Condensed Matter Physics Center (IFIMAC) of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM).

1) Chemical identification with AFM and Machine learning (postdoc). Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) with CO-metal tips is able to disclose the inner structure of molecules with unprecedented resolution. Our goal is to achieve a complete chemical identification (structure and composition) of molecules through the combination of AFM images and deep learning models trained with AFM theoretical simulations.

2) Manipulation of molecular charge states (PhD). We’ll explore the manipulation of molecular charge states and the operation of single-molecule switches with quantum mechanical (QM)-derived classical potentials that accurately describe the structure and the energetics of the molecular distortions both in the fundamental and the excited states.

3) Virus-surface interactions (PhD, postdoc). We’ll combine all-atom and coarse-grained molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations to characterize the interaction of viruses (including SARS-Cov-2) with different materials. This work is part of a multidisciplinary project that aims to identify suitable substrates for the capture and inactivation of viruses.

We welcome applicants with a background in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Data Science or related areas with the required (master, PhD) degree. Prior experience on the topics specific to the position (i.e. machine learning, Molecular dynamics, simulations for biomolecules..) is an asset. We are looking for highly motivated applicants that enjoy working in close collaboration with world-leading experimental groups. We’ll support postdoctoral candidates with a competitive CV in their applications to funding programs like “Juan de La Cierva” and “La Caixa Junior Leader” to extend their collaboration in the group.

The positions are available immediately and the selection process will be open till the positions are filled. Applications and requests for further information should be sent to:
Prof. Rubén Pérez ( ruben.perez@uam.es )
Applications should include a CV (including grades) and contact information for two reference
